October 2009 NORSECORE, DEFINITION: Norsecore, although originally a derogative term for blasting high-speed black metal lacking of any real attitude and/or ideology, has become somewhat of a valid description for bands and has developed more of a stable definition amongst heavy metal fans. Essentially norsecore (sometimes labeled as "black" grindcore) is grindcore (minus the death and thrash influences) fused with black metal vocals, imagery, and ideology. Norsecore however is not always fast and usually has more of a musical direction than grindcore. The roots of norsecore can be traced to the 1994 release Transilvanian Hunger by the Norwegian band Darkthrone although some norsecore elements were present in A Blaze in the Northern Sky. Other characteristics of norsecore are blast beats and unaccentuated guitar riffs. Examples include: Ancient, Ars Macabra, Dawn, Funeral Mist, Lightning War, Limbonic Art, Setherial, Tsjuder, Vargsang. It is closely related to the Gothenburg sound (nicknamed "Swede-Core).
